The aim of this camp is to help your child become a Worry Warrior: someone who experiences anxiety/worries/compulsions and feels empowered to manage these difficult feelings, thoughts, and behaviors with skill, curiosity, and compassion. 

This camp is appropriate for children ages 9-12 who are experiencing symptoms under the umbrella of anxiety, including generalized worries, separation anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, panic symptoms, rumination, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

The camp will involve: 1) daily lessons of new skills and 2) experiential practice of skills taught, through conversation, writing, arts and crafts, and other activities. This camp is well-suited for both children who have and have not had treatment for anxiety. 

Cost: $425.00 (not insurance billable, but includes all supplies needed for camp) 

Dates: 
August 12 – 15, 2024 
Half Day (1:30pm – 3:30pm). 
No before/after care provided outside of camp hours.
If your child is attending our AM camp, which dismisses at noon, please make lunch plans accordingly, as we will not be providing care between 12:00pm and 1:30pm.

Pay Attention to Attention (and Behavior Too!) – In Person Class http://childrensprogram.com/2024/02/pay-attention-to-attention-and-behavior-too-in-person-class/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 17:52:52 +0000 http://childrensprogram.com/?p=1338 This in-person weekend class is designed for elementary age children (1st – 5th grade) who struggle with self-control and/or effortful attention (AD/HD).  We will focus on teaching children to exercise self-control in peer interactions, so that they can work productively and play appropriately. The in-person class setting will closely approximate classroom and social situations, so that your child can practice these skills in a representative environment. Parents will observe the class so they are better able to reinforce these skills through at-home practice.  

The group is led by Jeff Sosne, Ph.D., a child psychologist with more than forty years of experience. He specializes in helping children with attention and self-control problems, and has offered these groups more than 200 times.  

This is a two day workshop, held over the course of a weekend. All sessions are held in person.

TBRI® Caregiver Support – Virtual Group http://childrensprogram.com/2024/02/tbri/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 19:09:02 +0000 http://childrensprogram.com/?p=1296 For biological parents, adoptive parents, resource parents, and caregivers of children and teens who have experienced early trauma or loss. We do our best to group participants with others who have shared experiences. 

This support group will provide parenting tools and techniques to use with children and teens who have had early trauma and continue to struggle with regulation and healthy connection. Each session will have a learning segment, followed by an interactive time to process and problem-solve the unique challenges that each caregiver is experiencing with their child.

Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is an evidence-based therapeutic model that trains parents and caregivers in attachment-based, trauma-informed interventions to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Connecting Principles for attachment needs, Empowering Principles to address physical needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors.

Series III: TBRI Correcting Principles – This series will focus on parenting tools and techniques to use with children and teens with early trauma who continue to struggle with regulation and healthy connection. It will focus on strategies to help learn how to correct behavior while maintaining a strong connection with your youth.

RISE UP provides a microcosm of what students may experience in middle school. Campers practice key relationship skills with one another with the goal of increasing maturity and confidence. Fun-filled outdoor games, crafts, play, thought-provoking activities, and supportive group discussions center around the RISE UP principles (Regulated, Inclusive, Self-Aware, Empathic, UPstanders). We provide close supervision and a safe space to help campers learn when and how to step up, but also when and how to step down. We do not allow campers to mistreat one another, and we utilize small group activities to ensure we are matching up campers who are able to support one another in their growth.

Dates: August 12 – 16, 2024, Half Day (9 AM to 12 PM). No aftercare provided outside of camp hours.

Clinic Overview

We are pleased you are considering the Children’s Program doctoral clinical psychology internship program. Children’s Program is a multi-disciplinary mental health clinic serving children and families. Our internship in clinical psychology offers an opportunity to learn from more than 20 licensed psychologists, all of whom have a unique specialty relating to children and families. Areas of specialty include: diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders (including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and developmental delays), mood disorders and anxiety, issues related to trauma and attachment, and issues specific to children involved in the child welfare system. Children’s Program clinicians use empirically supported treatments and work primarily from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy perspective. We offer a number of therapy and psychoeducational group programs and classes for children and families. 

We are proud to have served our community since 1987. Although located in Southwest Portland, Children’s Program serves children, families and agencies from across the state of Oregon. In addition to psychologists, Children’s Program employs developmental behavioral pediatricians, a child psychiatrist, licensed professional counselors, a social worker, a psychometrician, tutors, and also is a training placement for students from various training programs and specialties (e.g., Pacific University, OHSU).

The Children’s Program internship has full membership status in the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), and will participate in the APPIC match (APPIC #2543). Prerequisites for Application

Internship candidates must be doctoral students in counseling, clinical, or school psychology. Both psychometric assessment and psychotherapy experience are required. Qualified candidates will ideally have completed at least 400 intervention and assessment hours, with preference being given to applicants who have a majority of hours completed with children and/or adolescents. A minimum of 4 years of graduate training is required. All qualifying examinations must be passed by the internship application deadline. A candidate’s dissertation proposal must be approved before the internship match ranking deadline.

Please note, we require a Supplemental Assessment Report for all applicants, which should include a comprehensive evaluation with a child or adolescent client (not for a class).

Applications

Applications are due on 12/1/2023. Applicants will be notified of interviews on 12/15/2023. Interviews will be held on 1/17/2024 and 1/19/2024, either virtually via Zoom or in-person, depending on the preferences of the applicant and logistics. No preferential treatment will be given to applicants interviewing in-person versus virtually. If applicants are unable to interview that day, alternative arrangements may be made. Applicants will meet the Director of Training and Assistant Director of Training for a 1-hour individual interview. An optional virtual group meeting with all applicants will be held from 12:00pm – 12:45pm to provide applicants the opportunity to speak with current trainees (e.g., residents, practicum students) and staff psychologists.

The Children’s Program is seeking a full-time psychologist resident. Our private multidisciplinary children’s mental health clinic in southwest Portland employs more than two dozen professionals (psychologists, licensed professional counselors, developmental & behavioral pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychometricians, speech-language pathologist, and educational consultant) and has served thousands of families over more than three decades. The Children’s Program is also a multitiered training site, offering placements for practicum students, interns, and residents. The residency position will start early September 2024 and continue for one year.   

This residency will focus on the treatment of trauma and anxiety in children and adolescents. The position will be comprised of core training experiences as well as supplemental opportunities based on trainee interest.

Core training experiences include the following:

  • school-based individual and group trauma services for high school students (1 afternoon per week)
  • co-leading support groups for parents raising children with early trauma, attachment wounds, and loss (1 group per week)
  • psychological evaluations of children and adolescents in the child welfare system (1-2 per week)
  • small caseload (4-6 per week) of individual therapy cases presenting with anxiety and related disorders
  • co-leading Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) groups for parents of children with anxiety (1 group per week)
  • therapeutic day camp for middle-school aged youth (1 week in the summer)

Supplemental training opportunities can include:

  • co-leading adoption support groups for adolescent adoptees
  • individual trauma therapy with children and adolescents
  • opportunities to learn a range of evidence-based models for the treatment of trauma, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
  • co-leading Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) groups for adolescents with anxiety
  • training in Exposure and Response Prevention, Habit Reversal Training, Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics, or mindfulness-based practices
  • providing services to children with chronic illness and their families to improve coping, adherence to medical regimens, and daily functioning

Residents will receive at minimum two hours of supervision each week. Additionally, residents are encouraged to participate in the clinic’s established seminar schedule for further training and growth, as well as monthly clinic meetings in which leading experts in the field are invited to present. 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Candidates should hold a Psy.D. or Ph.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited institution   
  • Applicants must have completed an APA-accredited or APPIC-member pre-doctoral internship

psychiatrists, psychometrician, speech-language pathologist, and educational consultant) and has served thousands of families over more than three decades. The position will start in September of 2024 and continue for one year.   

This position will involve a combination of assessment and intervention. The resident will complete psychological evaluations of children and youth (ages 2-18) for whom Autism Spectrum Disorder is a primary referral concern. Previous experience in ADOS-2 administration and/or clinical work with children and youth with ASD is desirable. Intervention work will focus primarily on working with children and youth ages 11-21 who have ASD diagnoses as well as co-occurring challenges related to anxiety and depression, social and adaptive skills deficits, executive functioning vulnerabilities, etc. Resident should be neurodiversity-affirming and also should have experience and comfort working with LGBTIQA+ youth and related adjustment concerns. Opportunities for group social skills intervention and parent training and support are also available.

A background in assessment and intervention with children and families is required and experience with evidence-based evaluation and therapy is preferred.

We will continue to follow guidelines set by the CDC and the State of Oregon for protocols regarding exposure to Covid.

As a client of Children’s Program, you may be asked to wear a mask in session, at the discretion of the clinician, if there are any signs of illness, or pre-existing health conditions that put either you or your clinician at risk. We have masks available at both the front desk and in clinician’s offices.
