LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS & FACILITIES

Shawn Marshall, MA, LPC

Shawn Marshall, MA, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Portland, Oregon with nearly 30 years of experience helping preteens, teenagers, young adults, and their parents navigate emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges. At The Children’s Program, Shawn provides therapy and parent consultation focused on teen anxiety, ADHD, depression, emotional regulation, and school-related difficulties.

Shawn specializes in working with middle school, high school, and young adult clients who are struggling with anxiety, mood changes, attention difficulties, anger, or the growing pressures of school, peers, and social media. Many of the teens he works with are navigating challenges related to ADHD, executive functioning, motivation, and independence.

His approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with family systems principles and practical skill-building. Shawn works collaboratively with teens to help them better understand patterns in their thinking, emotions, and behavior, while developing strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and improve confidence. Therapy focuses on helping adolescents gain greater insight, stronger coping skills, and improved emotional regulation so they can navigate school, relationships, and everyday life more effectively.

A key part of Shawn’s work involves supporting parents of teens. Parenting adolescents can be challenging, particularly when anxiety, ADHD, or emotional struggles are involved. Shawn regularly consults with parents to help them adjust their approach, improve communication, and support their child’s growing independence while maintaining healthy boundaries.

When appropriate, Shawn also collaborates with schools, physicians, and other professionals to help ensure consistent support across settings.

Before joining The Children’s Program, Shawn worked in residential treatment, community mental health, school consultation, and clinical supervision of interns, giving him a broad perspective on the challenges facing children and adolescents today. In addition to his clinical work, he serves as the Director of Operations and Facilities at the clinic.

Shawn has presented to parents and professionals on topics such as the impact of technology and social media on the teen brain, ADHD in adolescence, and modern parenting challenges.

A longtime Northwest resident, Shawn has lived in the region for more than 35 years. Outside the office he enjoys running, snowboarding, mountain biking, stand-up paddleboarding, and traveling with his wife. He also enjoys spending time with their two young adult children. A former competitive soccer coach, Shawn was named Oregon Male Competitive Soccer Coach of the Year in 2019.
