The aim of this class is to help children experiencing anxiety/acute stress feel empowered to manage their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors with skill, curiosity, and compassion. The trauma edition of our Worry Warriors class will focus on the intersection of anxiety and acute stressors/traumatic events. This class is appropriate for children ages 9-12 who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety due to or separate from a traumatic or acute stress event.
The class will involve:
1) psychoeducation around how anxiety/acute stress can affect memories and body responses,
2) daily lessons of coping and regulation skills, and
3) experiential practice of skills taught, through conversation, writing, arts and crafts, and movement activities. This class is well-suited for both children who have and have not had treatment for anxiety and acute stress/trauma responses.
This class is best suited for children who are thoughtful, reasonably comfortable in social situations, and engaged. Having another mental health condition is acceptable (e.g. ADHD, depression), as long as other conditions are well-managed. This class is not appropriate for children classified as high-risk: one who is at risk of harm towards self or others or is currently in the midst of an acute stressor/trauma. Please reach out to pramanujam@childrensprogram.com with questions about whether this group is a fit for your child.
